St. Raymond of Peñafort

16th century
Fresco
Church of St. Peter Martyr

The line below the picture reads B[EATUS] RAIMUNDUS DE BARCH[ELONENSE], "Blessed Raymond of Barcelona." Raymond of Peñafort is sometimes called by this name because he was the archdeacon of the Barcelona diocese. The inscription calls him a "Blessed" rather than "Saint"; he was not canonized until 1601.

Above the picture, the first line starts with the Latin word hic, "here," and ends with semper, "always." The rest of the line makes no sense. The second and third lines translate as "a lover of virtue and of canon law, restrained, discreet." (?)

This is part of a decorative strip of several frescos below the clerestory in the church, all celebrating Dominican notables. They are in excellent condition because they were covered over for centuries and only rediscovered in the 1920s.
